Hello Everyone! Tudo bem? How are you in Portuguese?

I hope that you all had a great week! We had an awesome week packed full of miracles, heat, biking and learning Portuguese. Haha! There are a ton of people that speak Portuguese in this area so we are practicing and learning Portuguese with them! It is a lot of fun but hard. I thought Portuguese and Spanish were basically the same, I was wrong. Haha. They are similar but quite different.

Last Monday we went to visit the Yahagi’s, the ward mission leader’s family. It was a lot of fun but on the way back I almost fell off my bike haha. We were riding back kind of fast and we were going down a hill. I was trying to pedal but one of my pedals is broken so I couldn’t get a good grip on it. Anyway, long story short, as we were riding down this hill I sort of face planted on my bike. The bike kept going but I was sort of hovering on the bar. I thought I might die. My bike was going so fast. Then miraculously, I was able to get my foot back on the pedal and get back onto my bike. Wow! It was crazy. God was definitely protecting us! Haha!

Sushi with Tsurumi Shimai! Love her!
Sushi with Tsurumi Shimai! Love her!

Update on Namiko Chan!! She is awesome!! We met with her again this last week! She is so awesome! We asked her if she had prayed and she said that she had but just in her heart because she wasn’t 100% sure what to do. We reviewed prayer with her again and asked her to pray again this week. She said she will! We also invited her to church and she said she wants to come! We are going to pray that she can! She is really awesome. I love Namiko Chan!

On Wednesday we were riding to a member’s house, on the way we stopped and talked to a lady. We asked her where a store was, we already knew where it was but it’s a good way to get a conversation going haha, and she told us to follow her to her work so she could look up the address. The Japanese people are soo sweet. They always want to help you the most that they can. We followed her to her work and she takes us into a birth control clinic, all of her coworkers looked very shocked. It was interesting. She looked up the address then explained to us how to get there. Haha. So nice! Then we gave her and her coworkers Eikaiwa flyers. They were all shocked. They took them but acted like a bunch of middle school girls when a boy walks into a room. It was an interesting experience but hopefully some of them come to English class. Haha!

We went to visit Maria Shimai in the hospital this week with Koseki Shimai. In the car, we were able to talk a lot with Koseki Shimai. She is amazing! Her faith is so strong!! She told us the story of when she got baptized and how life was for her when her husband was against the church. He is now very strong in the church but at the beginning of their marriage there was a time when he did not like the church. I’m just amazed everyday by these members and how much faith they have! I absolutely love them.

Taniguchi Family!!! They are awesome!

Yesterday we met with some new investigators! They are a family! We called them last week because their number was in the phone and they set up an appointment for us to come back and visit. They are from Brazil. Sandro is the father, Katia is the mom, Maria is the daughter and Rafael is the son. They are so awesome! Katia is hilarious! We talked to them about past missionaries and what they talked about. They said that we were the first girl missionaries. They didn’t even know that there were Mormon women. They said they used to meet with missionaries for 30/30. We asked them if they wanted to do that again. They said yes and set up an appointment for next week! We told them that we would teach English then teach the gospel part in Portuguese. They are super excited because they love helping us with our Portuguese! They are such a cute family! We also told them that I was singing next Sunday in Portuguese and asked them if they could help with our pronunciation. They said yes, then looked at their schedule and said they are going to come to church next week to hear it. We didn’t even need to invite them! They invited themselves! Super excited!

It’s been a great week! I don’t have enough time to write about all of it. I love Toyohashi! Learning Japanese and Portuguese is great! The members are awesome! My companion is hilarious! I am so grateful for my mission. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and he loves all of us. I know that Heavenly Father knows each of us by name. He loves us. I am so grateful for the knowledge of the Plan of Salvation. I am grateful for eternal families. Please remember that you are all important!

I hope you all have a great week! I love you!!!!!!!

Have Fun Slap Faces!

HEEEYYY!!!

I hope that everyone had a great week!! Once again, we are out of time soooo I will type this email fast and hope it makes sense. Haha.

We had a great week here in Toyohashi! Armour Shimai is great! She really wants to work hard and I am learning tons of stuff from her everyday. She doesn’t need any training, she’s already great at everything! Haha!

We found some awesome new investigators this week! Namiko is one of them! She is in her 20’s and she loves English. We met her at Starbucks, we drank iced white hot chocolate lol, and talked in English for a bit then asked her if she wanted to hear our messages. She said yes so we taught her about Heavenly Father and prayer. It’s all still really new to her but she told us that she is going to pray this week! Super excited for her! She also loves doing hair and eyelash extensions so we are planning on getting haircuts and eyelashes done, maybe. Haha.

Yesterday night, we wanted to find one more investigator before the night was over. We started to call some former investigators in the phone and one answered and said they wanted to meet again! We have another appointment next Sunday! Yay! The power of prayer is real.

One of the Elders in our area is from Brazil so English isn’t his first language. He’s really good but sometimes he doesn’t get certain phrases. One day we were laughing a lot and he asked us why. We told him that we were slap happy, he didn’t get it. So we explained what slap happy meant but he didn’t get it all the way. As we were leaving the church, he rides away on his bike and yells back at us, “Have fun slap faces!!!” We were dying. It was hilarious. Hahaha!!

Another crazy thing that happened this week……. Sayuri San, the investigator I mentioned in my last email I think. We went back to visit her on Monday night. We were a little early so we waited a few minutes before knocking. Finally we knocked and no one answered but someone was in the room next to the door with the light on. So we knocked again and said hello. Then her Dad sticks his head out the window, makes eye contact with us and shuts the window. Haha ok…. so we wait a few more minutes then decide to go back downstairs and decide what to do next. We tried calling Sayuri but she didn’t answer. As we were deciding what to do next, her dad and little sister came downstairs, got in their car and drove away. We decided to try knocking just one more time. We tried again and no one answered. We went back downstairs and decided to go visit an old investigator. As we were looking her address up on maps, the dad came back. He stopped the car by the entrance and just waited. We thought it was a little odd so we just kept putting our helmets on and getting ready to go. As we were putting our helmets on, the mom walks downstairs and gets in the car. She was walking very cautiously and checking over her shoulder a ton before getting in the car though. Then we get on our bikes to leave and all the sudden Sayuri comes running up to the car from a different entrance but she’s running with her head down. She checks over her shoulder then jumps in the car and they sped away. It was a really weird. Sooo we might take a little break before trying to go back and visit.

Also, it is SUPER HOT AND HUMID! Everyday we walk outside, we feel like we are walking into a huge steam room. It is soo hot. Wish us luck this coming summer.

The members here in Toyohashi are great! I love them! They are super nice and sometimes try to speak little English phrases to us. Haha yesterday, when we were leaving the church one of the members called out to us and said, “Be Careful… Sunshine.” Hahahaha it was really sweet.

Getting ready to go out and hand out English flyers and Book of Mormons. Haha.

I love working here in Toyohashi. I love working with Armour Shimai. I love being a missionary! I know that Jesus Christ loves all you. He is our Savior. I know that Heavenly Father hears our prayers.

I hope everyone has a great week! I love you all!!! Thank you for all the support and love!

Meeting the bean chan (new missionaries)
Meeting the bean chan (new missionaries)

Hello everyone!!

I met the bean chan (new missionary) on Wednesday! She is soo awesome! Her name is Armour Shimai! She is also from St. George but we didn’t know each other before the mission. Haha! Everyone keeps on asking us if we did.

Tons of things happened this week but I’m really short on time so I’ll give a few highlights and add some pictures.

We did a lot of finding this week. We got tons of phone numbers and got some appointments with some new people so we are super excited for those!!

Yesterday, we were riding home from an appointment and saw an old lady clipping her trees so we stopped and asked if she needed any help. She actually said yes!!! Most of the time, we stop and ask people and they say no and kind of just tell us to leave. Haha. She told us that she is short and that my friend (Armour Shimai) is tall so she would like it if she could clip the branches off the top part of the tree! We clipped the branches then just talked to her for a little bit. Turns out she has been to church 10 years ago, I’m not sure if it was the Mormon church or a different one but it was a Christian church for sure. We asked her if we could come back and talk to her about our message again on Saturday and she said yes! So we will be heading back over there on Saturday! Super excited!

Today one of the members wanted to dress us up in yukatas! I’ll attach pictures!

Sorry this email is kind of all over the place but basically we had a great week and my new companion is awesome! She is fresh out of the MTC and super excited to work! This next week we are planning on working really hard and finding lots of new investigators! I’m so grateful to be a missionary and I love this gospel!

I hope you all have a great week! LOVE YOU!

SUWA

Hello Everyone!!!

This was one of the best weeks ever!!!! Oh my goodness, soo many miracles! Where do I even start…..

First of all, last Monday night we got a call from the people in the main office telling us that there was going to be a change in our transfer for the last few weeks. There was a new missionary coming in so one of the sisters in Meito was going to be her companion, one of the missionaries in Toyota is going to transfer to Meito and we are going to need to be with the other missionary in Toyota until the end of the transfer. We were a little stressed because we didn’t know how we were going to figure it out but we had a lesson so we decided to think about it after the lesson. When we got home that night we got another call from the office. They told us that there was going to be a change and that they needed me to transfer up to SUWA😆 for the last few weeks of the transfer! AHHHH!!!!!!!! I LOVE SUWA! Just in case people forgot, Suwa was the area I was in when I very first came to Japan! I was so excited to come back!

Wednesday morning I got on the 5 hour train ride back up to the Nagano Prefecture! I got off the train in Suwa and felt like I was home. It was really cold up here compared to Aichi Prefecture but it was so amazing. I was excited to see all these people that I love so much.

Thursday was crazy! We biked all over the place, we biked over 20 miles that day. We were exhausted but our last appointment made all of the biking and exhaustion worth it. We had a 30/30 (30 mins English and 30 mins gospel) with Yuko san and her kids. Their friend and cousin were also over. All of the kids are in the age range of 3-11. We did lots of English games with them then Yuko’s 7 year old son folded his arms and said, “aren’t we forgetting something? We need to do the prayer thing.” It was so sweet. So we all prayed together then one of the kids asked us if we do memorized prayers. We showed them a picture of a sandwich and explained that prayer is like a sandwich. The two pieces of bread are always the same, the way we start our prayers and the way we end them are the same, but the middle is dependent on the person. Just like everyone likes different sandwiches, everyone says different prayers. The kids all thought that was really cool and started to flip through the pictures on my iPad, they got to the Plan of Salvation picture and had TONS of questions. We had originally planned on teaching them a simple lesson about prayer but it turned into a lesson on the Plan of Salvation. We taught it very simply and then asked the kids where they wanted to go. They all emphatically said, “The Celestial Kingdom!” It was just so amazing to see the Plan of Salvation click in these little kids brains. The gospel is so simple and amazing. At the end of the lesson we asked if we could pray again and one of their friends, Kanta Kun, asked if he could say it! Of course we said yes! He told us that he might have to read the words because he can’t remember them and we said that’s fine haha! We all sat ready to pray and the room was just silent, we opened our eyes to see if Kanta Kun had understood. He was sitting there with his eyes tightly closed praying in his head. The other kids started to giggle because he was so silent. A few minutes later he opened his eyes really big, looked at us and said, “I did it!” With a huge smile on his face. It was so amazing. This little 9 year old boy said the first prayer that he ever said in his life and loved it. These little moments make everything worth it. I absolutely love helping others and seeing them light up when things make sense to them. I love being with them when they say the first prayer that they have ever said. Everything about this gospel is just so amazing and I’m so grateful to have been blessed to be able to come to Japan as a missionary.

One more huge miracle that I’m going to talk about happened on Sunday. Last year when I was here with my trainer, a man named Jason walked into the church and asked if this was the Mormon church because he used to be Mormon and wanted to start coming to church with his family. We said yes and exchanged numbers to text him about church stuff. We texted him last year a lot and he could never make it because his wife wasn’t ready yet so we kind of stopped texting as much. 3 weeks ago Jason texted the missionaries in Suwa out of the blue and said that he was ready to come to church now. They told him when church was and he still didn’t come. We texted him again 2 days ago to ask if he was coming to church. He didn’t text back until Sunday morning. He texted and told us that he was coming with his whole family! They showed up for sacrament and stayed for the whole thing! After church we talked to his wife and she said that we could come visit them on Saturday because she wants to learn more about the Mormon church, she is Catholic. We invited them to church next Sunday and they are all excited to come! Their 9 year old son became really good friends with the Branch President’s son! It was one of the biggest miracles ever!!!!!!

I absolutely love this work. I love being a missionary and I am so grateful that I have had all the experiences I have. I know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us. I know that we are all important.

I love you all and hope that you everyone has a great week!

Love,
